Part One:            An Overview of the 1974 Season

The 1974 season was one of major change…….. Jackie Stewart was retired, Emesron Fittipaldi had moved on to McLaren bringing with him Texaco sponsorship from Lotus. Lotus will win some races with Ronnie Peterson while  Ken Tyrrell had two youngsters in his team…. Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler…replace the late Francois Cevert and the retired JYS.  The Brabham team won some races while the Hesketh team brought allot of fun to the paddock……..and the American invasion continued with the arrival of the Penske and Parnelli teams.

The biggest story of the season though is the rebirth of Ferrari.  Enzo Ferrari recovered from a lengthy illness and reorganized his racing team, redirected his finances (endurance racing is finished….everything goes into F1), shifted personnel, and commited himself to what looked almost like a do-or-die Grand Prix season.  The key to Maranello’s  rebirth was bringing science to F1.  Their test track at the factory (Fiorano) allowed Ferrari to duplicate any track configuration and condition either wet or dry.  Besides  a video tape system tied into 10 TV cameras and a photo cell system buried in the track surface to record instantaneous times at 48 strategic points….. Ferrari had a Heuer-developed computer system that was fed all the information gathered at Fiorano so that Ferrari could see the true worth of any modifications to the race car clearly revealed in indisputable mathematical form.  And they now had a young driver who was very good at testing…Niki Lauda.

Tragedy is with us again in 1974…..Peter Revson (UOP Shadow) will lose his life in South Africa and Helmuth Koinigg (Surtees) will die at Watkins Glen.

The 1974 season had 15 races.  7 drivers won races….. Emerson Fittipaldi won 3 races for McLaren and the WDC.  Ronnie Peterson (Lotus) and Carlos Reutemann (Brabham) also were victorious 3 times.  Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter (Tyrrell) each won 2 GP’s and Denny Hulme (McLaren) and Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari) won 1 each.  The WDC was settled in the last race of the season at Watkins Glen.  McLaren also won the Constructor’s Championship over Ferrari and Tyrrell.

Part Two:                     Watkins Glen

I ordered those same 2 Pit seats for this year that I had in 1973.  With the death of Peter Revson earlier in the year, my wife had lost her taste for F1 so I invited a friend (Jimmy Tarquinio) for the race.  It was Jim that took me to the Watkins Glen 6-Hour race in 1971 that got me into following motor racing.  We camped at the circuit.  With having the expensive seats you will again see that most of the photographs are from the area of the pit straight.

Part Three:                   The 1974 USGP………….the Numbers Game……..

            4th:            Emerson Fittipaldi          Mclaren M23

Part Four:                     My Photographs

Going into the USGP, 3 drivers had a shot at winning the 1974 Drivers Championship…….  Emerson Fittipaldi and Clay Regazzoni were tied at 52 points while Jody Scheckter was 7 points back with 45.  For some reason, the front suspension of Clay’s Ferrari went “wrong” and he wasn’t a factor in the race (the same problem occurred in Niki’s Ferrari as well..)   The only way that Scheckter could win the WDC was to win the race with Emerson finishing in 5th…… but with the Brabhams of Lole and Pace rocketing off at the start, that just wasn’t going to happen.  Eventually it was Jody stopping out on the track and Emerson finishing 4th and clinching his 2nd WDC.  I will add that Helmuth Koinigg was killed early on in the race but there was no announcement made at the track and I didn’t know that this had occurred until Patty told me when I got home from the race.
