Well, finally have my Can Am pics digitalized
and cleaned up. I only
attended 6 CanAm races……..
1971 at Watkins Glen
My first race weekend. A
McLaren 1-2 with Revson and Hulme in M8F’s.
I was “rooting” for Jackie Stewart in his Lola T260 but
he retired with tranny failure.
I didn’t own a camera so ……..
1972 at Mosport Park
The opener for the 1973 season.
Jackie Stewart signed to be Denny Hulme”s partner with
McLaren……but his famous ulcer came in to play and he was
replaced with the defending champion, Peter Revson.
The big news was that Porsche had joined with Roger Penske
and was bringing a turbocharged 917/10 to challenge the McLaren.
At Mosport Mark Donahue was the fastest driver but the
Porsche had some engine problems while in the lead and came in
second behind Hulme. Again
no camera so ……
1972 at Mid Ohio
George Follmer was now driving the Porsche as Donahue had a
major accident while testing at Road Atlanta.
George was on the pole with Hulme beside him….. the race
was hit with rain and that caused a lot of havoc…..
Follmer won and Jackie Oliver came in 2nd in the
UOP Shadow. I had just bought my first camera and brought one roll of GAF
slide film to experiment with….here are a few slides from that
experiment.

1973 at Watkins Glen
The Porsche 917/30 of Mark Donahue dominated the series and
this race. The McLaren team pulled out of the series after being
crushed by the Porsche’s in 1972.
Which left UOP Shadow and a number of private Porsche
917-10’s and McLaren M20, M8F’s, and older Lola’s and
McLaren’s to make up the field.
Donahue won at the Glen with David Hobbs 2nd in
his McLaren M20.

1974 at Watkins Glen
The CanAm is in its death throes.
The SCCA wanted to go with a 5-ltre stock block and a 3-litre
racing spec for the 1974 season.
The promoters wanted to keep the “big-bangers” so a
“compromise was instituted…… the new engine regs would be in
place for 1975 and for 1974 a fuel consumption formula of 3 miles
per gallon would be instituted for the big=blocks and the
turbo’s….. belief is that this would level the playing field and
yet not make the old machinery obsolete.
Result….. Porsche pulled out of the series and what was
left was 2 new cars for the UOP Shadow team and lots of 2 and
3-year-old cars to compete over the 8-race schedule…….
Which changed to a 6-race schedule….and ended up with only
5 races on the books as race promoters dropped the CanAm for the
F5000 series.
At the Glen…… I got a pit pass from the Bob Nagel team
(Lola T260) so I basically walked around the pits and took a few
pics…. A UOP 1-2 with
Oliver the winner and Follmer in 2nd.

At Mid-Ohio
Took the family and actually took lots of slides.
The big new at Mid-Ohio was that Penske brought back the
917-30 for a one-off race. Car
was driven by Brian Redman. Also
Hurley Haywood brought his 917-10 but ran it in “Non-turbo”
form. Oliver won the
main event with Redman 2nd, and Haywood third….. with
Bob Nagel a fine fourth…..

and here is a pic of Patrick Tambay's
Lola that won the 1980 SCCA "CanAm"
championship..........yuck...
